111 Squadron RAF was based at RAF Souk El Khemis, Tunisia during World War 2. At 0915 hrs on 3rd February Corporal D.H.Chard was on duty at aircraft dispersal, when he was hit by a large piece of shrapnel and killed instantly during an attack on the aerodrome by a formation of German FW190�s. A second airman was also killed while delivering petrol to the Squadron dispersal area and five other airman were injured, one seriously.

Donald Chard was the son of Robert Huggins Chidgey Chard and Edith Chard; husband of Annie Florence Chard, of Maiden Newton.
