Maiden Newten Madness

The day is fast approaching when all are planning will be put to the test, Having survived an intensive grilling of all  the arrangements by Stanley at the last meeting. Dave and myself think we can cope with any thing on the day!!!!!. We have received over 80 entrees so far which will probably put us over 100 on the day.Entrees are  excepted on the day BUT PLEASE DON'T LEAVE IT TO LATE as all runners must be registered before they can run ( Stanley may also panic if we have to many  try to enter late).

As far as the team challenge goes, it was a lot  easer getting varies groups to say yes to run than it is proving to get them to put there entrees in. So far the Fire station are going to win as they are the only group to enter a full team. I am sure that the Rugby, football and junior football parents aren't going to let this happen, so PLEASE GET YOUR ENTREES  IN

Thanks Phil England

NEW! from Phil England:

Most of the organisation is in place now, we already have 35 paid up entrees and look like ending up with over a hundred runners on  the day. We have been very lucky to gain sponsorship for the event from Altro Resin Systems of Maiden Newton, which has made things a lot easer .We are trying to run a local team challenge as well i.a local groups enter teams of at lest  three people who get sponsored to raise money for there on group or club. The team with the combined shortest time will win the team challenge trophy (if that sounds confusing or you wish to enter a team  give me a ring 01300 320478). Any one who doesn't think they could manage to run 10K, but would like  to help on the day please give me a ring as we can still do with more help.

Introduction

Maiden Newton Runners were founded in 1985 inspired by the Run The World event founded by Sir Bob Geldorf. It is a small band of runners generally of mixed abilities. Unlike some running clubs, there is a strong emphasis on the social side.(Someone once unkindly remarked that the only thing that ran "was the dye in their T-shirts!")

The Maiden Newton Runners is a small club - the numbers have remained consistently at between 15 and 20 - which aims to encourage people to have a go at running. Our practice has been to use our club entry into the London Marathon in such a way that all club members, at some time or other, have an opportunity to run this world recognised event.

Meetings

We currently meet in the Chalk and Cheese, on the second Thursday in every month, where we conduct our club business. The meeting usually lasts an hour. We discuss forthcoming running events, past achievements and any social undertakings with which we may be involved as a club. All are welcome - particularly potential new members. It is light-hearted and, although we have some very capable runners, nobody need feel overwhelmed.

Activities

We organise local club runs and an annual fun foot race over 5km which encourages youngsters to take part - the Greenford Gallop. Not all entrants to this event gallop - there is a walk for the very young.

Each April/May time sees the running of the Johnnie Kipps Run. This is an annual club run over a fairly arduous 6 miles. This starts at the valley floor in nearby Wynford Eagle and continues climbing until you run near to the ancient Romano-British hillfort of Eggardon, before descending along a winding lane down to finish at Wynford Church.
Some may be interested to know how such a run came into being and why it is so named. In fact it is called The Johnnie Kipps Run after a cousin of the late Lady Wynford who, on a visit, decided to go for a Sunday morning run around what is now the course. He performed this jog in exactly an hour. The late Lord Wynford then wrote to our then Chairman and now President, John Arscott, challenging the Maiden Newton Runners "to beat that". Never ones to shirk our responsibilities we 'picked up the gauntlet' and now as many club runners as possible assemble during the spring to beat Johnnie Kipps' hour mark. We always do! It has now developed into a formal Club Run - and almost every Club member has won the event at some time or other.
The winner receives the valuable and much coveted Johnnie Kipps Trophy.

In the past there was a run designed to visit every church in the local C of E Team Ministry. A distance of some 42 miles! This was undertaken in a relay with runners selecting the 'legs' which suited their individual abilities. It hasn't been performed for a few years now, but could be revived if interest were once again there.

Some of our activities, in particular the Greenford Gallop, are used to raise money for local causes such as the school, church, and youth groups.

We also have social events such as our Annual General Meeting which is followed by a dinner and the announcement of the Club Personality of the Year. We have, in the past staged a very successful beach barbecue to which members brought their children.

Membership

We always welcome new members. The annual subscription is 6.
