Dead Interesting

08/07/2011 - 10/07/2011

Enjoy exploring places celebrating life and death, such as Sherborne cemetery and discovering stories of the past. This may prompt you to reminisce about your own family histories and share these with the group. You shall see how the dead of different generations are represented in various forms, be it simple headstones and memorials or elaborate monuments, mausoleums and stained glass windows. You shall consider how changes in burial practices reflect attitudes of the living towards the dead, and discuss alternatives to traditional practices in an increasingly secular age.

Literature(ly) Walking in Hardy's Footsteps

08/07/2011 - 14/07/2011

Thomas Hardy was a great walker, knew Dorset as only a walker can and was very observant of the natural world. It will be in this spirit that you shall set out on foot to discover some of the settings for his novels. The five walks will be based on the following works, not necessarily in this order: Tess of the d’Urbervilles, Return of the Native, The Woodlanders, The Distracted Preacher (short story), The Well-Beloved. The longest walk is approximately 8 miles; none strenuous and will be followed in a leisurely pace in order to fully appreciate the locations and scenery.
