Bats

21/05/2011 - 21/05/2011

A day course with a difference – in that it’s at night! The Course will begin with a talk about the ecology of British bats, their preferred habitats and population trends and how to identify British bats by way of field characteristics. This will be followed by a bat detector workshop, where attendees will get to learn about bat calls and how to differentiate between species by call. Finally, you will have a bat walk around the Centre – putting the bat detector skills to the test! Please bring a torch!

Flying Dragons

21/05/2011 - 21/05/2011

Dragonflies are among the most ancient of living creatures. From fossil records we know that these amazing insects were flying some 300 million years ago, before even dinosaurs roamed the earth. The Kingcombe Centre, on the river Hooke, with two of its own ponds makes it an ideal location to introduce you to these beautiful insects. Pond dipping and locating old body cases outdoors will complement classroom sessions covering habitat and distribution, ecology, methods of identification and how to distinguish dragonflies from damselflies.
