On 8th June 1940 H.M.S.”Glorious” was shelled and sunk by German battlecruisers Sharnhorst and Gneisenau, 170nm west of Harstad, while covering the Allied withdrawl from Norway. The vessel capsised after being hit by a number of 11” and 5.9” shells over a period of 90 minutes. It is probable that Chief Stoker Charles Dawe died as a result of this attack.
Charles Dawe was the son of James and Sarah Dawe; husband of Nellie Dawe, of Frome Vauchurch.
